In the AutoCAD world, it’s called “layers.” You add them, organize them, change them, and remove them. They are logical and very important. The layers in a drawing are like sheets of paper on which a drawing is written. In this way, objects in a drawing can be labeled, shaded, or otherwise marked in a logical way. The objects are “on” the top layer, the “sub” layer, the “subsub” layer, and so on, depending on how deeply you want to get into the paper.
The AutoCAD software includes a standard library that allows you to create basic drawing objects. You can draw and edit lines, circles, angles, and text. You can also draw and edit a few “complex” objects, like arrows and polylines. But for more complex and complex drawing needs, you may want to use the various add-on packages that Autodesk offers, some of which you may find useful when creating drawing objects.

As with other drawing programs, drawings consist of an ordered sequence of frames. These frames contain lines, arcs, polylines, circles, splines, and so on. Frames are like layers that are attached to one another, as well as to the top layer of the drawing.
In the figure above, the drawing is named “Sample” and is the only drawing in the current drawing session. The top layer is named “Layer 0,” and is the active layer in the drawing. The next layer is “Layer 1,” and is named “Text.” The next layer is “Layer 2,” and is named “Solid Line.” This layer contains two lines, but only the left line is active. Next to the right line is the layer named “Sub Sub Sub,” and the drawing is full of circles and lines. The first of these two circles is named “Point 1,” and is at the coordinates (10, 10).
In the next screen shot, we’ve added text to the drawing. We’ve selected all the circles and lines that are on “Layer 2,” so that they are red. The text was added to the active layer, “Layer 0.”
