A rabbit model of acute pulmonary obstruction to test pulmonary functional recovery with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is an effective means of supporting patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome. However, there is a lack of animal models for use in the pre-clinical evaluation of this therapy. To develop a reproducible animal model for acute pulmonary obstruction. We used a lung cannula to occlude the trachea of rabbits, and attempted to use ECMO to support them, while attempting to maintain the same parameters as with clinical practice. The lungs of eight rabbits were artificially obstructed with a lung cannula. The cannula was left in place for 6 h with ECMO. Pulmonary function was assessed with a modified Pneumotachograph and arterial blood gases at baseline and after occlusion. At 6 h after the occlusion, all rabbits had developed severe pulmonary dysfunction with PaO2 60 mmHg. The ECMO system was then used to support all rabbits for a further 30 min. At that point, the rabbits were switched to standard ventilation. Oxygenation and arterial blood gases were then measured, and the lungs were evaluated histologically and weighed. Pneumotachographs obtained from rabbits that had been supported by ECMO demonstrated an improvement in mean inspiratory time (tI) and a significant improvement in mean inspiratory pressure (PImax). There was a statistically significant improvement in PaO2 (p = 0.04) and PaCO2 (p = 0.02) at 30 min following the cessation of ECMO. Histological evaluation of the lungs confirmed pulmonary oedema. The weight of the lungs correlated well with the mean inspiratory pressure and PImax. The rabbit model of acute pulmonary obstruction was successful in demonstrating the potential use of ECMO in acute respiratory failure.

Also, create any model as a 3D view. The 3D model appears in your drawing window and can be manipulated with the other drawing objects in the drawing.

A 3D view, unlike a 2D view, allows you to rotate and move the 3D model in any direction. Also, the 3D view appears in the drawing and can be selected.


Resize Your Viewport

Select the Viewport tool from the View menu and choose More. You can then choose among four options to resize the viewport, as shown below.
