From 1973 to 1982 a total of 105 patients with bronchopleural fistulas were managed surgically at the Groote Schuur Hospital. The origin of the fistula was saccular rupture of a previously anastomosed part of the bronchial tree in 82 patients; the remaining 23 patients developed an empyema following parenchymal lung disease. The patients were divided into three groups: group A, simple closure with omentum (n = 71); group B, resection with closure using omentum and covering of the stump by the greater omentum and diaphragm (n = 6); and group C, resection with closure of the bronchial stump by the greater omentum and suturing of the bronchus to the pericardium (n = 28). There were no deaths. The pulmonary failure rate was 24% (26 patients). Resections were performed in 19 (66%) of these. All patients in group A were successful, as were five (83%) in group B and 16 (57%) in group C. This study demonstrates that bronchopleural fistulas can be treated by simple closure with omentum, and the need for bronchial resection is dependent on the causative conditions.Q:

When do bars in the $x$-axis of a topological product become points?

Let $f,g: \mathbb R \to \mathbb R$ be continuous functions. If we have the product space $Z = \mathbb R \times \mathbb R$, with the topology of the product space, then I think that the only way for a bar to disappear is to have $f(x) = g(x)$ for all $x$.
Am I correct? Can anyone provide a more elaborate proof for this assertion?

Yes. The product topology on $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}$ is the co-product topology

Trash or Treasure? – Part II

Part II – I was embarrassed that my first try at this had been so wrong. But having realized my mistake, I took the opportunity to do more research. I found a very helpful page on Trash or Treasure at The page and its diagram of trash and treasures are shown here.

I am hoping you enjoyed reading Trash or Treasure part I. If you have questions or comments regarding the message, post them on our discussion page. Please read it carefully before writing, and remember, this is not necessarily the official position of the Church.

Trash or Treasure? – Part I

Joseph Smith (1796-1876), the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), asked a simple question when he instructed his scribe to record his revelation to Oliver Cowdery in 1829. He said, “What do you see in the Palmyra [New York] hill?” The answer he received inspired the use of gold plates for the translation of the Book of Mormon.

Following is a transcript of the revelation recorded by the scribe:

“Joseph Smith Jr.: What do you see in the [Palmyra] hill?

“Joseph Smith Jr.: I am to say that I see, lying upon the surface of the hill, a great number of plates; and they are as such as also appeared to Daniel [Mormon] for which he sought to take them; and the history of the plates is abridged.

“Joseph Smith Jr.: I have been commanded to say that the history of the [Book of Mormon] plates is abridged, that Satan may not have all the scriptures pertaining to our salvation.”

The Scribe

In the revelation, Joseph received a revelation about the plates and the
