Dietary sodium, potassium, magnesium, and manganese deficiencies affect the epidermal barrier in mice.
Effects of dietary deficient states on the epidermis were investigated in mice. A hyperhidrotic dermatitis-like skin disease was produced by applying a high water-holding capacity, water-permeable contact agent to mice. Mice lacking essential elements–potassium, magnesium, or manganese, the three major ions in the epidermis–developed severe epidermal dehydration and became lethargic. Furthermore, the skins of these mice showed typical features of epidermal barrier dysfunction such as an impaired barrier function, a decreased epidermal water content, and an intercellular lamellar dissociation. These findings suggest that the epidermal barrier function is critically dependent on these three ions.Q:
