Technology has revolutionized how people buy, sell and maintain their homes. What our predecessors could not even imagine is now a reality. Today, we can find a house on the other side of the planet, browse its photos, change the design, take a virtual walk along it and buy it online. To succeed in this competitive field, businesses must focus on technology and consider new emerging factors.

With increasing energy costs (prices jumped 32% in the European Union and 16% in the U.S. in 2022), most people are shifting their spending habits—including housing. As many are unable to afford a new property, the focus shifts to improving existing living conditions. This includes designing more energy-efficient and functional living spaces.

All of these factors create perfect conditions for the rise of e-design. By integrating technology in modeling interior design projects, businesses can open up new opportunities to thrive. In this article, I will outline the main tech that e-design businesses should keep an eye on to thrive in the nearest future.

1. Rise Of Smarter Tools

In 2022, text-to-image AI-powered tools like DALL-E 2, Stable Diffusion and Midjourney have gained popularity across many fields. Among artists, AI-generated images even provoked disputes when outperforming the works of real people and winning awards in art competitions.

Businesses also embrace generative AI. We have already seen brands use it to improve marketing campaigns. Design platforms and stock providers aren’t lagging behind, either—Shutterstock has launched its AI image generation platform to allow users to create their own images based on texts.

In the creative fields, text-to-image tools offer endless inspiration sources, and the license allowing commercial usage of it creates even more business opportunities.

This can also be a game-changer for the interior design industry and how designers communicate with clients. Currently, clients provide designers with inspirational images, existing designs and ideas. Designers are then tasked with translating those ideas into a coherent plan that reflects their client’s space and needs.

Stable Diffusion can simplify that process for both sides. Clients can use it to explain their ideas, and designers can visualize home improvement projects in minutes. While the tool can aid the visualization process, it is not a substitute for designers and architects. It does not allow the creation of real design projects but, rather, serves as a tool for brainstorming ideas and inspiration.

2. Continuous Development Of Artificial Intelligence (AI) And Machine Learning (ML)

Another important source of growing an e-design business in 2023 is to embrace AI and ML for increasing efficiency and productivity. Applications of these technologies can go beyond image generation. AI and ML can be used in more extensive home improvement projects that require a lot of expertise and knowledge.

For example, in architecture and construction, AI is used in building information modeling software (BIM) such as AutoCAD. It helps to identify problems in architectural design projects and suggests potential improvements.

In the e-design industry, we are also observing a growing number of AI-based solutions. For example, we develop AI-based solutions that help to digitize floorplans, design items and visualize interior design projects. For professionals with deep expertise, it is another instrument for speeding up their working process. Those designers who embrace AI capabilities will be among the industry leaders in the years to come.

At the same time, AI can help improve design service quality. Sometimes, interior design projects lack functionality. Sometimes, a pretty picture does not equal a practical or efficient design, nor does it reflect actual measurements or blueprints. AI can solve those problems and help in creating practical projects.

3. Need For Improved Communication Between Designers And Clients

For an average person, home renovation is one of the most challenging and expensive events in their lives. The process is complicated and involves numerous players, including designers, subcontractors and materials. Homeowners become emotionally involved and want to control the whole process, which results in frustration, information overload and lack of progress.

Designers often take on the role of a project manager, keeping track of documents and serving as the go-between for clients and contractors. With multiple clients and projects, the process gets complicated and makes communication ineffective—resulting in delays and possible errors.

A dedicated project management or CRM system can make communication between clients and designers easier. It can also make keeping track of documents, contractors and projects more manageable, allowing designers to scale their businesses quickly.

CRM systems already exist on the market. For example, the well-known Hubspot CRM system can be adapted to e-design businesses. However, there is an opportunity to create better ones that offer more specific solutions for this sector.

4. Increased Demand For Skilled Labor

The trends mentioned above entail consequences for human resources management in the e-design industry. Companies need more than just an IT team. They need talent that can embrace and create new technology to keep up with the market trends. We no longer believe that one code can’t write another. Those days are long gone.

New language platforms like ChatGPT, GPT3 and Codex can generate code in a variety of different languages. Moreover, Codex can identify and fix bugs in its own code. This should motivate software engineers to advance their knowledge and embrace new technologies more quickly. As in the case of interior designers, IT professionals who learn how to use new advances in their daily work should lead the market and define future trends.

Technology is transforming the home renovation industry. It can offer new possibilities for homeowners who want to create comfortable living spaces as well as opportunities for businesses to create new innovative solutions and products that aid in that process. E-design companies that successfully adapt to new trends should lead the market in the next few years.
