Ramadan in the Quran

There is five times the month of Ramadan mentioned in the Quran. We will tell you all with a little explanation. So, you must keep reading.

The first mention of Ramadan in the Quran

The first occasion was when Allah decreed fasting on all Muslims. It was in Al-Baqarah. The translation of the verse is below.
O you have believed decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous —Surat Al-Baqarah 2:183

The above verse clearly had an order from Allah, which made fasting compulsory for Muslims in Ramadan. Allah also mentioned this as a duty, which was also assigned to other people before Muslims.

Now, every scholar quotes this verse when he has to emphasize on the importance of fasting in Ramadan. Allah also gave the best reason for fasting, which is to make people righteous. After all, righteousness is the sole value in the eye of Allah.

The second mention of Ramadan in the Quran

The second time the Ramadan mentioned in the Quran was in the next verse as mentioned above. The translation is below.

“But fast is best for you if you only knew.” —Surat Al-Baqarah 2:184

In this verse, Allah described the importance of fasting and declared it is a best practice for Muslims.

Fasting is forbidding one’s self from eating and doing some acts from dawn till dusk, which is a tough practice to do. Sometimes one is not a habitual person for fasting. But it is best practice. Now, medical science has proved the benefits of fasting from other sources. If there were zero benefits, then still Muslims have to practice it because it is a direct order from Allah. And a pure Muslim cannot go against this order.

The third mention of Ramadan in the Quran

The Ramadan mentioned in the Quran third time in the Surat Al-Baqarah, right after the above two verses. And the translation is below.

“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you, and perhaps you will be grateful.” — Surat Al-Baqarah 2:185

In this verse, Allah told us that the Quran was gifted to us in the month of Ramadan, which is guidance and criterion for Mankind. Moreover, Allah has eased the fasting condition for the ill and travelers. So, Muslims have ease, not hardship.

Fourth mention of Ramadan in the Quran

The fourth time Ramadan was mentioned in Surat number 16. The translation of the verse is below.

“Allah is with those who restrain themselves.” — Quran 16: 128

In this verse, Allah guaranteed his support to all Muslims who act on the divine order and
perform fasting. So, the easiest way to get Allah’s support is to fast in the Ramadan.

Many famous Sufi personalities had a habit of fasting even outside of the Ramadan. Prophet (PBUH) also fasted three times every month. Therefore, if any Muslim wants to get more righteous, then he/she must perform a fast.

Fifth mention of Ramadan in the Quran

The fifth time Quran mentioned Ramadan was in Surat Al-Qadar. The translation of the verse is below.

“Allah has made Laylat al-Qadr in this month, which is better than a thousand months, as Allah says…The Night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months. Therein descend the angels and the Rooh [Jibreel (Gabriel)] by Allah’s Permission with all Decrees, there is peace until the appearance of dawn.” — Al-Qadar 97:1-5

In this verse, Allah told all Muslims about the noble night of Al-Qadar when angels descend from the sky from dusk till dawn. As a Muslim, we need to prepare all year in order to get the rewards of that night. The worship of that one night will be equal to the worship of 1000 nights. But that night is not clearly told. Every Muslim has to search for it in the last ten days of the Ramadan. Umrah in the month of Ramadan can be purchased from best travel agency for Hajj umrah.
