In the robotics field, the two most common types of mobile robotic  are  the ROV (remotely operated vehicle) and the UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle).

ROVs are used for inspection and search of many types of objects, such as conducting underwater inspection and search for wreckage, undersea thermal imaging and study of the ocean floor (see bathythermograph),  electromagnetic detection and tracking of objects, testing of the effects of nuclear explosions and other explosive events, maintaining the highways and bridges, aeronautical and space research and manufacturing, salvage, robotics for transport of heavy cargoes and materials,  underwater robotics (for recovering a boat or submarine, inspection or drilling, etc.),  search and rescue, and emergency firefighting.

UAVs are most commonly used for aerial photography, for weather observation, to deliver  deliver real-time weather information, aerial surveillance, for reconnaissance, etc.

UAVs are used for agricultural crop monitoring (for measuring water and soil moisture, surveying yield, etc.), for erosion prevention, for crop fertilization, for fire detection, for inspection of the processes of power plants, and for other purposes.
