The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is a comprehensive, school-wide program that teaches students how to change their own behaviors as well as the behaviors of other people who might be involved in bullying situations. The program was developed by Dan Olweus, an author and researcher who worked for many years at the University of Vermont and also was a professor at the University of Bergen in Norway. He has researched bullying prevention for over 30 years and his theory of intervention has been accepted and used in many settings worldwide.
Since bullying is a societal problem, teachers are often asked to teach prevention. The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program was created to help teachers address this issue. In the primary and elementary grades, students have weekly lessons on how to respond to others who might be victims or bullies. Students are given homework assignments and are asked to reflect on their role in bullying situations.
In the middle and high schools, classrooms receive lessons on bullying prevention for a two-week period at the beginning of the semester. In each lesson, students take part in role-plays on how to respond to bullying situations. As part of the intervention, students are asked to complete the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program Questionnaire, which serves as a guide for all other activities. The one-page questionnaire includes 11 questions, many of which are used in the program’s lessons.
The questionnaire consists of three parts, which parents, educators, and students fill out together. The first part asks about the student’s grade and ethnicity. The second part describes the student’s experience with bullying (victims and bullies). The third part asks about the student’s experience with the bully/victim couple. Some questions are used as homework assignments in the weekly lessons.
In the middle and high schools, students are asked to identify the behavior of their classmates, teachers, and family members that could be considered bullying. They are asked to distinguish the types of bullying in each of the three categories and are also asked to identify what about the behavior of the bully, victim, or both contributes to that behavior.
For example, students are asked what they do when they or a peer is being bullied, such as talking back, calling names, spreading rumors, mocking, spreading malicious rumors, hitting, threatening, threatening or intimidating with a weapon, punching, kicking, invective, and torture.
