Photoshop CS5 (2022)

The Basics of Photoshop

Photoshop is the most popular image editing software in the world, and its success is due to its impressive features, simple interface, and excellent quality control features. It is user friendly and allows users with no design background to turn out professional-looking images. Its powerful layer-based editing system allows for easy graphic manipulation. Photoshop is powerful and often seen as a stepping stone to design programs.

If you are familiar with the capabilities of Photoshop, you will be able to get started quickly with this guide, but if not, be sure to read a Photoshop primer first.

Photoshop has many powerful features. Its editing system is easy to use and contains numerous tools for creating effective designs. Photoshop includes tools for creating and editing an image without the use of layers (non-layers tools), like the Pen tool and Brush tool, as well as tools for working with layers, like the Pen tool.

However, the really powerful tools in Photoshop are for working with layers. It supports two types of layers: Smart Objects and Layers.

Layers work best for working on images with multiple layers, especially when working on a complex image.

Designing with layers is very easy. Photoshop contains a selection window as well as the Brush tool, which is an easy-to-use tool that users often use to select a specific portion of an image.

An image can be opened in Photoshop, and then various layers can be added to that image, which creates a mask on top of the original image and reflects all the changes to the original image. This is very useful when working on a design. Photoshop includes the layers palette, which lists all the layers and lets you manipulate them using a variety of tools and then viewing them side by side.

The Paint Bucket

The Paint Bucket tool is used to select an area of an image that can be altered without affecting the rest of the image, like a person selecting the surrounding area of an image without affecting the hair and clothing. The Paint Bucket is also used to add a textured, or “matted,” effect to a photo. (See “3 Ways to Add Texture to a Photo.”)

You can choose a brush from the Brush tool (see Fig. 1) or open Brush Editor and experiment with a set of brushes that comes with Photoshop. As long as you have a brush selected, you can create a new brush using your mouse. This is a great way to start creating your own brush styles.

There are four settings that you can change in the brush settings. These settings are indicated by the small white numbers next to the adjustment icons (see Fig. 2).

Brush settings

* Stroke: Change the edge of the brush when it’s making a stroke.

* Shape: Change the shape of the brush.

* Size: Change the size of the brush.

* Opacity: Change the amount of transparency that the brush applies to an image.

You can also change the size of the brush, the brush spacing, and the number of points in the brush using the brush editing tools (see Fig. 3).

* Size: Change the brush size.

* Spacing: Change the brush spacing.

* Points: Change the number of points in the brush.

* Width: Change the width of the brush as it moves over the image.

* Position: Change the position of the brush as it moves over the image.

* Pressure: Change the amount of pressure that you apply to the mouse when you’re creating the brush.

* Size Relative to Path: You can move the brush to the edge of a shape, path, or text (see Fig. 4). The position of the brush relative to the shape or path is indicated by the numbers on the right side of the image. This feature is a good way to break down large shape or text without creating a bunch of freehand or manual paths.

* Distance: Change the distance of the brush from the object that it is painting.

You can also combine brush settings to create a new brush. For example, let’s say you want a brush that erases a small area while retaining the edge of the shape. You can combine the Size and Opacity settings to create a brush that erases a shape while preserving some of the edge.
