Newpro headquarters remains dark Thursday night after telling employees they’re closing up shop in an email on Wednesday.

The abrupt closure has left many in limbo, including some customers who are out thousands of dollars.

Kenny Dunn and Mary Ramsey trusted Newpro to get their bathroom renovation done quickly.

Mary says crews worked all day Monday and until about 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Then she got a call.

“And at 5 p.m. I got a call and he said, ‘I don’t know how to tell you this, but the company’s been dissolved and we’re not coming back,'” Mary said.

A similar situation happened to Kris Martin, who was looking for a reliable company to renovate his family home in Amesbury.

He says they did a great job replacing the roof last week, but then “just stopped communicating.”

Martin says Newpro was contracted to start a number of jobs on the hose next week, and that he had already pre-paid $50,000.

“Newpro already cashed everything and took the money,” he said.

Newpro is owned by a company in Dallas, Renovo Home Partners, that is, in turn, owned by a major investment fund.

For some reason, that company in Dallas appears to have closed, but no one knows why.

Newpro employee’s like Sean Compton were blindsided by the news.

He got a call from his operations manager at the remodeling company’s Wrentham office on Tuesday, telling him to stop the job he was on immediately and to return to the office.

“And I was petrified, I didn’t know what I did wrong, if I had done something wrong,” Compton said. “And I asked him, ‘Am I fired?’ He was just like, ‘No, just get back to the office immediately.'”

Other employees got the same phone call.

Martin says he and his coworkers took pride in their jobs. They’re shell-shocked, with no paychecks and health insurance set to expire on Friday.

“Something bad happened and I don’t know what it is,” said Peter Cohan, who teaches strategy and entrepreneurship at Babson College.

He said bankruptcy for the company that owns Newpro could be the reason for the abrupt closure.

“You don’t just close down a company, which is what seems what happened,” he said. “All these people that put down deposits, who were in the middle of their kitchen and baths remodeled or whatever it was that they were remodeling, suddenly they put the deposits in and they can’t even talk to somebody to find out what is the status of my job.”

For homeowners left without answers and unfinished renovations, it’s frustrating.

“Just do better,” Mary said.

NewsCenter 5 has reached out to both Newpro and Renovo Home Partners for comment.

The investment firm has no comment.

The Cogliano family, former long-term owners of Newpro, released the following statement:

“On behalf of the Cogliani family, who proudly led NEWPRO from 1978 until its sale to Renovo in 2022, we are deeply saddened by the recent closure of the company and the profound impact it has had on our valued employees, customers, and the New England community that supported us for decades.

We remain forever grateful for the decades of trust, support, and connection that made NEWPRO such a meaningful part of our family’s story — and of so many others.”

If you or a loved one has been affected by the Newpro closure as a customer, you can submit complaints to both the attorney general’s office and the Executive Office of Consumer Affairs & Business Regulations.
