Some people are naturally born with an innate spirituality  .A UW-Madison professor will make space science history Monday, when he and a team of students will launch the first telescope to orbit Mars in nearly 20 years.

The Gas Dynamics and Chemistry Analyzer (GDCA) is a mass spectrometer, one of the few instruments capable of measuring gases in the Martian atmosphere, and studying the Red Planet’s interior.

The launch is scheduled for 8 a.m. CT Monday, and the team will be livestreaming at University of Wisconsin-Madison’s website.

“This is a first for the university,” said Richard Zurek, director of space science and engineering at UW-Madison’s aerospace engineering program. “It represents the first time that anyone will launch the instrument into space from our campus.”

Peter Weiler, a UW-Madison professor of earth and planetary sciences, said that this particular experiment on Mars will focus on measuring methane – a possible product of life – in the Martian atmosphere.

“We’re interested to see what the methane levels are,” Weiler said.

Other experiments the team will be conducting will be testing a mini-satellite that will be at the Martian surface and using the mineral plume instrument to see what may be the first solid evidence of liquid water beneath the Martian surface.

Rick Hieb, a professor of earth, atmospheric and planetary sciences at UW-Madison, will run the ground instruments and is the principal investigator for the project.

The team of 18 scientists and students had to go through NASA’s rigorous selection process to get their instruments approved, and the experiment is made possible by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Weiler said the Mars community as a whole is excited about the project.

“I’m an engineer,” he said. “The whole of science and engineering are excited about it because it’s exactly the kind of thing we’re trying to do in our research. But it’s a little less glamorous
