Marshall ISD students, administrators and community members returned Monday evening to “the house that the Mavericks built” for the annual Meet the Mavs event with a special rededication of the newly renovated Maverick Stadium.

“Thank you for coming out to support our students and staff, and to be the first to participate within our newly renovated Maverick Stadium,” Superintendent Dr. Richele Langley said.

Board President Brad Buriss also thanked the crowd for its support as the district showed off the updated stadium.

“This place has been here a little over 45 years, and it was in need of a much-needed renovation, so as a school board we always try to do what is in the best interest of the students of Marshall ISD. Having new facilities is at the top of that list,” he said. “And we are excited about everyone that has used this stadium in the last 45 years and all of the ones that are going to use it for the next 45 years. We appreciate your support. We cannot do it without you. Thanks for choosing MISD, and go Mavs.”

The project includes construction of a new restroom and concession area for the home side, renovations to concession and restrooms on the visitor side, new aluminum seating for the entire stadium, new pavement, new safety fencing, upgrades to the ADA section, and the implementation of a Hall of Champions victory wall, highlighting the success of past teams.

Langley recognized everyone who played a role in making the project possible, including board members, administrators, the project manager, architect Goodman Lassiter Architectural Designs and contractor Casey Slone Construction. She additionally recognized head football coach and Athletic Director Jason Hammet, Assistant Athletic Director Hunter Ashley and Marshall High School Principal Mike Miller.

Special recognition was given to Coach Joe Martino, known as one of the district’s “favorite Mavericks.” In tribute to his more than 50 years of dedication, the district honored his service by renaming the Maverick film room in his honor.

“Coach Martino has shown an unwavering commitment to our Marshall Maverick for over 50 years,” Langley said. “He was here when Maverick Stadium was located on West Houston, and he was here when the stadium was built in 1980, and he is still here today.”

She said since joining the district in 1974, Martino has served in various capacities from teacher, administrator and coach.

“He continues to help in so many ways, but more often than not, you can find him in our press box filming room,” Langley said.

She said a plaque will be displayed in the press box to commemorate Martino’s service.

“As all of our Mavericks use this field, let us honor our past, celebrate our present and embrace our future,” Langley said. “This is your house and this is our legacy. We rededicate it in excellence, tradition and (unity). Welcome to the house that the Mavs built.”

Also Monday evening, attendees paused for a moment of silence in memory of Estefani Cabrera, a 15-year-old Marshall High School student who died this past week after experiencing a medical emergency Aug. 18.

The district also recognized various sports, spirit teams and organizations.
