OHA discusses property improvements and future projects in Kauai and Kekaha

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) recently convened a meeting focused on property improvements and management strategies that directly impact local communities. Among the key discussions was the urgent need for a concrete parking pad and fencing at a property to protect archaeological features from ungulate access. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the site, funded through donations and OHA resources.

Trustee Mercedes shared insights about a neighboring property that OHA acquired, which was initially intended for the University of Hawaii Maui campus but was ultimately accepted by OHA. This property is now managed by the university’s Hawaiian department, which has transformed it into a functional space for educational purposes, maintaining a positive relationship with the community without incurring maintenance costs from OHA.

Another significant topic was the Ho’omana thrift store in Wailua, Kauai, which serves underserved communities by providing essential services such as hot meals and hygiene products. OHA holds a ground lease for this property and is currently working on a required cesspool conversion by 2027, with initial project costs estimated at around $95,000. The lease arrangement allows OHA to support community services without financial burden.

The Kekaha Armory, managed by a charter school dedicated to preserving the Nihao dialect, was also discussed. OHA is planning necessary fire and life safety improvements, with an estimated budget of $45,000 for the upcoming fiscal year. The school has expressed interest in expanding its facilities, indicating a commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for its approximately 50 students.

The meeting underscored OHA’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and property stewardship, with plans for future projects that aim to benefit local residents while preserving cultural heritage.
